For a ski mountaineering tour on Mount Damavand, the difficulty rating for ski alpinism is D+ (Swiss Alpine Club). Based on Toponeige ski rating system, the ascent rating is AD (fairly difficult) and the descent rating is ski 4.3. The D scale ski and snowboard route rating is V.D11.R3.
For backcountry skiing on Doberar, the difficulty rating for ski alpinism is AD+ (Swiss Alpine Club). Based on Toponeige ski rating system, the ascent rating is PD (not very difficult) and the descent rating is ski 3.2. The D scale ski and snowboard route rating is III.D9.R2.
Like ski touring on any other +5000 mountain, for skiing on Mount Damavand, you require high physical capabilities (achieved by aerobic and breathing exercises, cardio workouts, etc.). Plus, adapting yourself to the altitude might be a challenge. So, an efficient and well-planned acclimatization plays a key role in the quality of your adventure. Middle East’s highest peak (5610m) and Asia’s highest volcano, Mount Damavand, is a popular off-piste skiing magnet. The Southern face route is the most popular for skiing. Gole Zard route and the routes starting from Lasem are also our suggestions.
To acclimatize yourself before your skiing adventure on Damavand and enjoy breathtaking views, you’ll spend a few days skiing on Doberar Mountain Ranges. You’ll find it to the southeast of Mount Damavand, with an over 70km length, and over 35 +3000 and +4000 peaks. The highest peak of this mountain range is East Doberar (4250m). Most of Doberar’s ski routes are on its northern slopes. Shadow, good snow condition, nice angle, and lack of huge rocks and trees make the northern slopes the perfect place for skiing. Doberar, Changizchal, and Lasem are the best peaks for ski touring on Doberar. Conquering each peak and sliding down to Lasem village takes only a day.
Generally, you can ski on Damavand Mountain from mid-November to mid-May, but in fact the amount of snowfall each year determines the best season for a Mt. Damavand ski touring experience. Strong winds, unstable conditions, and low temperature make the winter ascent tough. So, you’d better wait till spring. April and May are the best time to go.
