Top Ski Mountaineering Tour on Damavand and Doberar Mountains

Ski mountaineering in Iran is no myth! Beside the hot sandy deserts, the country’s amazing diversity of climate offers natural snow-covered regions perfect for ski lovers. The highest volcano in the Middle East and the highest mountain in Iran, the mythological Mount Damavand (5610m), and Alborz’s ridge Doberar (4250m)  have great slopes for skiing.

Among all the 16 routes leading up to the summit of Damavand (5671m), the Southern face route (which we’ll be skiing on) is the most popular to ski on. Being one of the longest mountain ridges of Iran, Doberar has multiple snow-covered peaks perfect for skiing on its eastern face. From all the peaks, including Doberar (highest), Changiz Chal, Gole Zard and Angemar, we have picked Changiz Chal and Doberar peaks for you to ski down (though you are free to choose as many summits as you wish). Since our professional guides trek up, down and around this mountain all year long and know the region perfectly well, you’ll be in great hands.

Day 1: Transfer to Polour Village- summit Changizchal peak and ski on the ridge

Start the day off with a 65-kilometer road trip from Tehran to Polour Village (2400m). Having taken a break, make your way toward Lasem Village (about 2700m) at the foot of Doberar Ridge (about 30min). From all the many 3000-4000m peaks that the lengthy ridge offers, have an almost 5-hour climb up to Changizchal peak (4100m). From the top, have an exciting downhill skiing on the good snow condition of the slope.  Head back to Polour to spend the night.

Overnight: Guesthouse or local house in Polour Village

Day 2: Doberar skiing Day!

Start your day with a ride to Lasem Village. Once there, start climbing up the ridge’s highest peak, Doberar summit (about 4250m). After a 5 to 6-hour ascent to the top, take a break to ski all the way down to Lasem. Have a ride back to Polour village for an overnight rest.

Overnight: Guesthouse or local house in Polour

Day 3: Get transferred to Damavand Base Camp- Climb up to Bargh-e Sevom Shelter.

Leave your extra equipment in the guesthouse at Polour; then make your way up toward Damavand Base Camp, Gusfandsara (3200m), in a 4WD. In case of adverse weather or snow-blocked roads, you’ll be taken to the last accessible parts of the mountain by road and you’ll need to climb up the rest of the way to Gusfandsara. From there, climb further up for about 5-6 hours to reach Bargh-e Sevom Shelter (4200m).

Overnight: Spend the night at Bargh-e Sevom Shelter or camp beside it.

Day 4: Summit Day

Ski all the way down to Damavand Base Camp- get a ride to local hot springs.

Early in the morning, make it to the roof of Iran, Damavand Summit (5610m). After 6-7 hours of mountain climbing, you will have joined the summiteers of the old mythological mountain. Enjoy the amazing scenery atop the crater and take your victory photos before skiing all the way down to Gusfandsara (about 2 hours). From there get on the 4WD to head back to Polour. At the guesthouse pack up and get ready for a ride to Rineh local hot spring to soak your cold body in the relaxing warmth of the water.

Overnight: Guesthouse or local house.

Note: You might need a bad weather substitution day. The unstable weather of ski season can make any unwelcome changes to the schedule. A substitute day may be included to make up for the unexpected.

Day 5: Goodbye day!

Get transferred back to Tehran.
